I've got a freight train over yonder

Lord I swear it knows my name

Two blind men on a tightrope

Or a hanging judge it's all the same

I know you had the blues one time too

Because I heard you crying late one night

Like you couldn't stand the pain

You come down to see me

On lonely street what for?

Sometimes I think if I could just forget about you baby

I wouldn't have to hang around there no more

If I was running from the law it might be easier

Than running back and forth and back and forth

And back and forth and back and forth

Good God Almighty help me keep my big mouth shut

When will I ever learn just to go to sleep

Trying to keep from chasing my tail running round in circles

While she piles up a list as high as the sun the ocean deep

About the ashes and the dishes and the toilet seat

The bad habits and the hours and the company I keep

Ain't no redhead stepson

Don't you point that finger at me

I am wandering wandering wandering like a stranger in my hometown

Right in the middle of who I used to be

Everything is changing and the ringing in my ears tells me

One wrong turn could do me in and one good move could set me free

One more time I start all over

Slugging it out in the trenches again

Hieroglyphics and voodoo

And some losers and some long shots and some battles

that I just can't win

But I'm living in an age of mercy

One door closes one door opens

And with any luck at all we'll come up swinging
