Down the block through the back streets and parking lots

Trying to lose this blue blue shadow that I've got

I am standing on the outside but it don't take much

Put me back in touch with what I'm here for and what I'm not

I have always been attracted to deserted streets in misty rain

Especially in misty rain and alleys ever since I was a boy

Near as I can figure it's for wanting to be part of something

Mysterious and precious a secret put there for only me to enjoy

My father worked on rocket ships named after gods and constellations

Went to William and Mary and the Air Force then to VPI

On the farm where he grew up Mammy told me every time he saw an airplane

He would freeze and watch until it vanished from the Virginia sky

Took us out to California in a baby blue Ford station wagon

We left Ohio Mom was pregnant with my little brother then

Got me a baseball for my birthday signed by all the New York Yankees

Mickey Mantle was the biggest in the middle and my dad drank a lot of gin

I spent so much time trying to push the river

All I really got was tired and wet

You'd have thought that I'd have known better by now

But it hasn't happened yet

I'd be in the clear if I could blame this all on circumstance

But my excuses scatter like confetti in the wind

Time just burns and none of this makes any sense

I keep seeing all this stuff I thought I'd buried showing up again

Down the block through the back streets with any luck

I'll get home without burning anyone

Tonight the highway is deserted all except a couple trucks

And the ghost that sits beside me riding shotgun
